A revenue waterfall is a schedule showing how revenue from customer contracts gets recognized over accounting periods. Finance teams use it to track how bookings and billings move via deferred revenue and become recognized revenue.
In SaaS these events happen at different times. A company may sign a contract in one month, invoice the customer in another, and recognize the related revenue over several months or years. The revenue waterfall brings all of it into a single view.
How Does a Revenue Waterfall Work?
To build a revenue waterfall schedule, you need details like the contract value, service period, billing dates, and revenue recognition rules.
Say a SaaS company signs a $12,000 annual subscription in January. The full contract value counts as a booking. If the customer is invoiced for the entire amount upfront, the company records $12,000 in billings.
None of that means $12,000 shows up as revenue in January. If the service is delivered evenly across the year, only $1,000 is recognized each month. The portion billed but not yet earned remains as deferred revenue and is gradually reduced as the service is provided.
ASC 606 & IFRS 15 require companies to earn revenue by delivering what they promised in the contract. A revenue waterfall shows when that revenue is earned over time and how much is recorded in each period.
Why Is a Revenue Waterfall Important?
Revenue waterfalls make timing differences easier to understand. Finance teams can view signed contracts, invoiced amounts, deferred revenue, and revenue recognized during each period.
They support ASC 606 and IFRS 15 compliance. Upgrades, renewals, usage charges, or multiple performance obligations can change how revenue is recognized throughout the contract term.
As contract volume and complexity grow, tracking the schedules manually gets difficult. Revenue automation software helps in updating the waterfall automatically when billing contract terms change, keeping reconciliation simple.
